I believe that if a film is prevented by its rating from addressing the defining feature/problem of forced marriage, that is that the heroine will be entering into a form of sexual servitude to a stranger in a culture where martial rape is likely not a concept, then forced marriage should not be central to a movie's plot. I wouldn't even mind if they had still come down on the mother's side, but you can't just not address this. This is really not an appropriate topic for a kid's film.Lilynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6937848248469121586.post-39815390771389323932012-06-26T07:52:31.868-07:002012-06-26T07:52:31.868-07:00But you are missing the fact that in the period th...But you are missing the fact that in the period that Brave is set in arranged marriages were the norm. Women were traded as chatell. No one married for love - especially among the nobility. Marriages were arranged to strengthen kingdoms etc. So the fact that Meridia doesn't want to get married or at the very least want to pick who she marries is the huge plot point in the movie. The fact that her mother starts to understand this is huge for that time.Heathermoorenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6937848248469121586.post-54319463482345095132012-06-23T01:39:38.590-07:002012-06-23T01:39:38.590-07:00Do you think any of these problems are to do with ...Do you think any of these problems are to do with John Lasseters promotion to run Disney animation.Simoncolumbhttp://www.screeninsight.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6937848248469121586.post-17863129362522924522012-06-22T21:10:31.865-07:002012-06-22T21:10:31.865-07:00Re your review: Noticed the Thursday LATIMES prof...Re your review: Noticed the Thursday LATIMES profile of Mark Andrews (wearing kilt) spinning Brenda Chapman's replacement, with no comment from Ms. Chapman.TerryMcCanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6937848248469121586.post-49787917819774117262012-06-22T19:31:02.288-07:002012-06-22T19:31:02.288-07:00Did not expect this. I would have never thought that you'd be giving higher marks to Madagascar over Brave. I hope when I see it, maybe I find something different. My three daughters so want to see this.bulldognoreply@blogger.com
